Imerj Art & Advocacy Projects
A gallery and advocacy for outsider, justice-impacted art. Outsider art refers to works created by self-taught or marginalized artists who operate outside the mainstream art world. Here at Imerj we particularly gravitate toward the raw, authentic expressions found in outsider art, often characterized by the use of unconventional materials, an uninhibited creativity, and lack of formal training. We hold a light for these artists and their work, recognizing the unique perspectives and stories they bring to the art world. Through our efforts, we help to raise awareness and appreciation for justice-impacted art, fostering a greater understanding of its cultural significance and artistic merit.
Mission
Imerj Art & Advocacy Projects is a multidisciplinary contemporary art center that engages multiple communities with exhibitions and programs that explore the carceral aesthetic, ethical, and social issues of our time. It is our effort to help justice-impacted artists and their work survive. This is possible by recognizing their art, which has important inherent value in maintaining attitudes toward the contributions of the artist to culture.
About the organization
Imerj Art & Advocacy Projects seeks to foster connections between communities in Texas and beyond. Imerj supports justice-impacted artists with critically needed supplies and a platform to introduce their names and work into the world of art. This is also partnered with facilitating second-chance initiatives and programming.
In addition to visibility, Imerj aids in artist development opportunities, connections with curators, art leaders, galleries, mentors, and others to change lives and enhance careers. Imerj seeks within its mission to support all artistic and cultural communities around America.
